The CPF: the essential first step
What is the CPF?
The CPF, Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas, is the main identification number for individuals in Brazil. It has 11 digits and is issued by the Receita Federal, the Brazilian tax administration. It is central to the country's administrative and economic life because it identifies each person in almost all public and private databases.
Accessible to foreigners
The CPF can be obtained by foreigners, even without permanent residency. It may be requested in Brazil through the Receita Federal or, in some cases, through Brazilian consulates abroad.
Not a residence permit
The CPF is not an immigration document. It does not grant any right to stay, reside or work in Brazil. It is only a tax and administrative identifier.
What is it used for?
In practice, the CPF is required for almost every procedure in Brazil: signing a contract, buying property, investing, setting up services such as internet or telephone, and using local payment systems such as PIX. Without a CPF, a foreigner is quickly blocked in daily life and investment procedures.
CPF and bank account
The CPF alone does not usually allow the opening of a standard bank account in Brazil. Banks generally also require proof of residence or valid immigration status, such as a resident card (CRNM/RNE) or an official document proving legal residence. Certain non-resident accounts may exist, but they remain limited, more regulated and reserved for specific profiles.
